The mark consists of a circular seal with an outer band that has the literal elements "THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN" and "1817" and two circular designs on either side of the literal elements "1817" with a sunrise design inside the circular band with a shield that includes an ancient oil lamp sitting on a book overlaid over the sunrise design with a ribbon below the shield containing the literal elements "ARTES" and "SCIENTIA" and "VERITAS".
