The name "Mary Baker Eddy" identifies the deceased founder of The First Church of Christ, Scientist. The Longyear Foundation was established by Mary Beecher Longyear in 1923. The Foundation is dedicated to preserve the records of the life of Mary Baker Eddy, the early Christian Science workers and her church and the maintenance of those records unchanged in order to promote accurate and verifiable awareness of Mrs. Eddy and her religion. Mrs. Eddy carried on a correspondence with Mrs. Longyear across a decade and encouraged Mrs. Longyear to provide educational opportunities for others when she wrote her, "You as an eminent Christian Scientist can do much in educating others. . ."
