"PURE CANE" and "1865"
The mark is a horizontal rectangular box with a basket filled with brown sugar cubes under the words "COMPTOIR DU SUD". The bow of a tall ship is on the right and two buildings are on the left. On either side of the basket are bags, barrels and growing sugar cane. The words "PURE CANE *1865* SAINT LOUIS" are in a box in front of the basket. "PURE CANE", "1865" and "SAINT LOUIS" are printed in broken lines to indicate that none is a part of the mark.
The mark is lined for the colors yellow, gold, brown, blue, and green. The remainder of the lining, as well as the stippling, shown in the drawing is a feature of the mark and not intended to indicate color.
The English translation of "COMPTOIR DU SUD" is "go down of the south" or "trading post of the south".
