"BROWN CANE SUGAR", "PURE CANE" and "1865"
The mark is a vertical rectangular box dominated by a tall ship under the words "COMPTOIR DU SUD". A basket filled with brown sugar cubes, sugar cane and a square wooden crate are at the bottom of the mark. In a box in front of the basket are the words "PURE CANE *1865* SAINT LOUIS" and, above this, are the words "BROWN SUGAR CANE". "BROWN CANE SUGAR", "PURE CANE" and "1865" are printed in broken lines to indicate that none is a part of the mark.
The mark is lined for the colors yellow, gold, brown, blue, and green. The remainder of the lining, as well as the stippling, shown in the drawing is a feature of the mark and not intended to indicate color.
The English translation of "COMPTOIR DU SUD" is "go down of the South" or "trading post of the South".
